Karen’s love of the mountain dulcimer, autoharp and bowed psaltery evolved after a visit to the Fort New Salem Dulcimer Festival in West Virginia. Since then, Karen has studied both dulcimer and autoharp with several national champions and has taken classes in bowed psaltery from the artisan who built her instrument. From American folk songs to international music, and from classical to modern, Karen makes her instruments sing with beautiful melodies and harmonies.
She has performed as a soloist during the Shenandoah University Mountain Dulcimer Festival and as part of a trio during Dulcimer Week at Western Carolina University. Closer to home, appreciative audiences range from kindergarten students to independent living residents. Karen offers private lessons for all three instruments and can make available a set of student dulcimers for small group workshops.
In addition to her musical talents, Karen holds a Masters of Education degree and was the recipient of the Shirley J. Lowrie “Thank You for Teaching” award in 2011.
